Stirring drama on drama
Never before has a documentary about theatre been as bold and has had this much access to a director of the caliber of Judith Malina. Framed by snippets of her latest play, the octogenarian artist reveals her message of love and persistence despite the societal forces that turn away from compassion, understanding and artistry. This film sits proudly on my bookshelf and every film lover owes it to him or herself to watch this wonderful piece.
striking subject matter and cinematography
this is a compelling, lyrically told, beautifully shot documentary about a true radical in the world of theater and in the realm of art in general. if you want to understand what conviction is, watch this film. judith malina believed in the ideals of her theater movement to such an extent that she willingly gave up her most profound personal freedoms in order for her movement to succeed. whether or not it was worth it is just one of the fascinating aspects explored in this film.
Long live the Living Theatre!
This is a beautiful look at the continuing career of actor/director/writer Judith Malina, an active founder of New York's The Living Theatre since the late 1940's. If you're a fan of political theatre, performance art, or artists in general taking their medium to new heights, Love and Politics is a fantastic portrait of such an artist. This is an intimate look at an artist who has had a profound role in political theatre and continues to be active to this day. After watching this documentary, I can only imagine that Judith will continue her work on stage until her very last breath.
It's awe-inspiring to know that we have living artists like Judith Malina and Marina Abramovic who continue to push the boundaries of art. Love and Politics is worth checking out to raise your awareness of the roots of modern art and the way humans can move other humans.
